The Role
We are currently searching for a Senior Manager, Corporate Health & Safety, reporting to the Sr. Vice-President, People & Culture. This is a 12-month, full-time contract opportunity. The Senior Manager, Corporate Health & Safety plays a key leadership role in driving and supporting health and safety as a core value across BDL and TBS. This position is responsible for aligning health and safety strategies with regulatory standards, leading prevention programs, and overseeing risk mitigation initiatives across all divisions — Logistics, Retail, and Corporate. The role includes managing the Health & Safety teams, enhancing training and safe work practices, and driving audit and compliance efforts to ensure a safe, compliant, and high-performing workplace.
Location
Our Corporate Office is located in Bolton, ON. We offer a hybrid work model with visits into the office a minimum of twice per week and on an as-needed basis depending on the role and function. This role requires regular travel throughout Ontario and Western Canada, a valid G class Driver’s license and access to a vehicle is required.
What You'll Be Doing
- Lead the development and execution of a unified, company-wide safety strategy across BDL and TBS, ensuring alignment with regulatory standards and organizational goals
- Act as the organization’s primary Health & Safety subject matter expert, advising JHSC Committees, operational leaders, and senior management to reduce risk and promote a proactive safety culture
- Mentor and lead the Corporate Health & Safety team, fostering alignment, knowledge sharing, and a high-performance culture across Logistics, Retail, and Corporate divisions
- Establish and oversee standardized safety procedures, policies, and training programs, ensuring alignment with legislative requirements and industry best practices
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to maintain up-to-date safety practices and ensure regulatory compliance across all business units
- Analyze incident trends and performance metrics, providing strategic recommendations and reporting to senior leadership to drive continuous improvement
- Lead investigations into major safety incidents, including critical injuries, ensuring root cause analysis, regulatory reporting, and implementation of preventative measures
- Manage high-risk portfolios and external partnerships, proactively addressing workplace hazards and minimizing potential financial and operational impacts
- Enhance and oversee the Corporate Health & Safety Management Program, with a focus on high-risk work, contractor safety compliance, and mobile equipment training
- Develop and implement H&S audit and site visit programs, ensuring consistent execution, tracking of non-conformities, and continuous improvement across operations
- Support the development and delivery of a unified H&S training program, including e-learning and practical components, to embed safety into day-to-day operations
- Actively engage in fieldwork and site visits to build cross-functional relationships, validate safety program effectiveness, and maintain provincial committee presence
- Perform other related duties and projects as assigned
Who You Are - Your Knowledge, Skills & Experience
Education
- Post secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, including Management Systems
- Actively working toward professional designation in a related discipline (CHSC, CHSM, CRSP)
- Valid First Aid/ CPR certification and Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License
Experience
- A proven professional with a minimum 10-15 years in health and safety environments
- Previous experience working for an organization with a unionized environment would be considered an asset
- Strong knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act, Workers’ Compensation, and CSA standards, with proven ability to interpret and apply regulations, assess operational impacts, and liaise effectively with external agencies (e.g., MLITSD, WSPS)
- Managing demand from multiple locations simultaneously and leading, motivating, and engaging a large group of professional staff
- Experience in self-managing an autonomous work schedule while providing leadership, support, and guidance needed to manage dynamic team schedules
- Demonstrated experience in acting as a Joint Health and Safey co-chair
- A thorough working knowledge of Heath & Safety Management Systems as well as internal programs and systems required for accident/injury related record keeping, retention, reporting, communication, material preparation
- Ability to recognize the requirement for continuous improvement models and how to implement them into health and safety policies, procedures and routines
Skills
- Excellent communication and mediation skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present visual data in both formal and informal group settings explain complex issues with precision and clarity
- Excellent critical thinking, analytical and problem-solving skills to make accurate decisions in risk-management situations
- Advanced proficiency utilizing MS Office Suite with the ability to build and deliver spreadsheets, reports, and presentations to all levels of the organization
- Excellent interpersonal skills required to work with all levels of logistics from senior management to unionized employees by promoting H&S as a Core Value
- Proven work ethic and ability to work in a high pressure environment
- Demonstrated leadership skills that will encourage and enable followership
- Demonstrates a customer-centric mindset with a strong preference for hands-on leadership and active field presence over remote management
- Proven expertise serving as a subject matter expert for Joint Health & Safety Committees and operational leaders, providing guidance, training, and strategic direction to reduce safety incidents and develop high-performing support teams
