The Role

We are seeking a dedicated Health & Safety Specialist to drive health and safety excellence across TBS Retail and Logistics operations. The primary focus of this role will be for our Logistics operations, however will be expected to provide targeted support to TBS Retail as needed. This is a full-time, permanent opportunity reporting to the Manager, Health & Safety – Logistics. In this role, you will ensure compliance with regulatory standards and company expectations while fostering a culture of continuous improvement in health and safety practices. This role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact by advancing health and safety standards within a dynamic environment.

Location

The H&S Specialist role will be primarily based on site at the Bolton Distribution Centre in Bolton, ON. This position will also require working on-site at associated Cross Dock locations as required. 

What You'll Be Doing

  • Ensure health and safety compliance across TBS Retail and Logistics, aligning with regulatory standards and company expectations
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate workplace hazards to enhance safety performance and reduce incidents
  • Deliver effective training programs, including in-person and e-learning sessions, to employees, supervisors, and managers on safe work practices
  • Conduct site inspections, audits, and hazard assessments to evaluate and improve safety measures
  • Collaborate with Disability Management to address workplace hazards and support return-to-work processes
  • Act as the primary contact for health and safety matters, including liaising with external regulatory agencies and responding to incidents
  • Develop, implement, and maintain health and safety policies and procedures, focusing on continuous improvement and compliance
  • Promote a culture of safety awareness through coaching, communication, and regular performance updates
  • Maintain accurate records and analyze safety data to identify trends and inform future initiatives
  • Provide guidance to Joint Health and Safety Committees, supporting their efforts to enhance workplace safety
  • Participate in emergency response planning and drills to mitigate risks and improve preparedness
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned

Who You Are - Your Knowledge, Skills & Experience

Education

  • Minimum post-secondary education in Health and Safety Management or related field with Occupational H&S Certificate
  • CRSP / CRST designation an asset
  • Accredited audit designation an asset
  • Ontario Class “G” driver’s license and access to a vehicle

Experience

  • 3-5 years of experience in a Health and Safety role required
  • 2-3 years experience conducting in-person training required
  • Previous experience working in a unionized environment is essential
  • Experience working in an auditing role is an asset
  • Experience operating/training with Mobile Equipment is an asset
  • Experience with ergonomics is an asset

Skills

  • Thorough understanding of risk assessment and Health & Safety Management Systems
  • Working knowledge of all applicable OHS Legislation including the Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation 851 Industrial Establishments, and applicable CSA Standards
  • A general understanding of industrial hygiene, hazardous and noxious substances, air quality, mechanical and electrical hazards, noise, and environmental testing
  • Knowledge of expectations surrounding Ontario (WSIB), OHS Act, and Reg 851
  • Competency in budgeting, safety analysis, and management presentation
  • A proven results-oriented track record for problem solving and issue resolution in a timely manner
  • Proven ability to make accurate decisions in critical risk-management situations
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills to work with people leaders
  • Proven ability to work within stressful and anxious situations, establishing goals and remaining focused
  • Intermediate computer skills of Microsoft Office Suite products
  • Valid First Aid/ CPR certification
  • Valid JHSC Certification. Qualified to serve as JHSC management co-chair at applicable sites
  • Ability to manage own work independently and effectively, by prioritizing work schedules and completing assigned duties within timelines
  • Capability to work a flexible schedule that includes days, afternoon, overnights and weekends
